PARIS, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Two French soldiers were killed and three others wounded in a military operation in Afghanistan, said French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office on Monday, raising the country's total fatalities in Afghanistan to 47.
The two dead were a soldier and an officer from the 21st Marine Infantry Regiment. They were fatally wounded by gun fire during an overnight operation in Tagab, north of Kabul, while three others were injured at the start of the operation.
"These soldiers gave their lives in the service of France's commitment to the peace and security of the Afghan people," Sarkozy said in a statement.
The French president condemned "insurgents' murderous attacks" on NATO military forces in Afghanistan, stressing France would continue to be a part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
About 3,500 French troops are deployed in Afghanistan.
