China Shows Armed UAV Designs In Zhuhai Air Show

Between 40 and 50 unmanned air vehicle models were on display at Airshow China in Zhuhai in mid-November, including fixed- and rotary-wing designs. While most of the systems appear to be aimed at intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance applications, several were depicted carrying missiles.

Among the more notable armed mock-ups were those on view at the stands of AVIC and the China Aerospace and Science Corporation (COSIC). However, with officials from both organisations unavailable to comment on the projects, their stage of development - or deployment - is uncertain.

AVIC's Pterodactyl appears to be all but identical to the General Atomics Predator A, complete with a V tail, a large nose with an under-slung sensor dome and two missiles similar to Lockheed Martin's AGM-114 Hellfire. AVIC says the design has "medium to long endurance," but fails to provide specifics.


Perhaps the most visually striking armed UAV on show was COSIC's CH-3, which has its wings mounted toward the rear of its fuselage and large forward canards with control surfaces.

Data displayed by the company claims a maximum take-off weight of 640kg (1,410lb), a top speed of 220kt (407km/h) and an endurance of 12h, with a communications radius of 108nm (200km). The CH-3 can also carry two precision-guided air-to-surface weapons.

COSIC also exhibited a larger design with what appeared to be anti-ship missiles, with the system potentially similar to the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk.


A diagram showed the WJ-600 scanning a large area of ocean and providing a data nexus for weapons platforms including aircraft, ships, submarines and shore-based missile batteries. The UAV was also depicted destroying a helicopter and a ground target with its missiles.

ASN Technology displayed a model of its ASN-229A armed UAV, with this also carrying two Hellfire-type weapons. The design has a bulbous nose, under-fuselage sensor dome and a twin-tail configuration.


The display model featured a skid landing gear, but the type could also be launched with a rocket booster and recovered by parachute. ASN says the design has a maximum take-off weight of 800kg including a 100kg mission payload, and a mission endurance of 20h.

The company, which claims to produce 90% of China's UAVs, says the model is close to entering service.

"The ASN-229A is still in its testing phase, but we expect it to be ready by the end of next year," says an industry source, who adds: "China is investing significant resources in its UAV programmes."

Further evidence of the nation's interest in unmanned systems was widespread, with several designs bearing a close resemblance to Western and Israeli designs.

These included COSIC's 6.5kg hand-launched CH-802, reminiscent of AeroVironment's legacy Pointer, and AVIC's Night Eagle, which shares common design features with the Australian-developed Aerosonde series.

In the rotorcraft sector, an unmanned development named the V750 was on show. With a rotor diameter of 7.24m (23.7ft), this has a 750kg maximum take-off weight including an 80kg mission payload and a reported service ceiling of 9,840ft.

 Also on display was a V-tailed non-military design dubbed the SL-200.


This was shown with three smoke pipes installed under each wing, with these intended to generate artificial precipitation. Exhibit material says the 180kg design could be flown to an altitude of 19,700ft.

Russia Offers Il-476 Aircrafts to China

Russia will offer China the new military cargo plane Ilyushin Il-476, which will be produced in Ulyanovsk, head of the Rosoboronexport department on exports of special property and services Sergei Kornev told reporters at Airshow China 2010 on Wednesday.

He leads the Rosoboronexport delegation at the show.

Il-476 is a new generation plane with profound modernization. We will offer this plane to our Chinese partners,” he said.

He confirmed the complete delivery of D-30KP engines for the Il-76.

China Requests AL-117S Engine And S-400 System From Russia

China has made a request for the purchase of Russian aircraft engines AL-117S and advanced anti-aircraft missile system s-400, writes on Tuesday newspaper "vedomosti", referring to the official MOD and a source close to the "Rosoboronexport.

After the visit of Russian Defense Minister Anatoly serdyukov in China, held two weeks ago, a new package of proposals in the field of Chinese military-technical cooperation has been reached. The Chinese side made a petition for the purchase of aircraft engines 117S (modernised version of the engine AL-31F, designed for the Su-35) and advanced anti-aircraft missile system S-400.

The russian side is ready to hold talks about the 117S purchase. But the export of S-400 systems is only possible after 2017, because of production limits, and because they have to enter service with Russia first.

This year, State by State banks and State guarantee funds the credit building three new factories of AA "Almaz-antei"-a new production plant in St. Petersburg, Obukhiv, new production on the basis of the Nizhniy Novgorod engineering plant in Nizhny Novgorod and plant "Avitek in Kirov. If these plans are implemented, then the order of China may be fullfilled after 2017, said an official of the Ministry of Defense.

On Tuesday in Beijing has 15 meeting of the Russian-Chinese Intergovernmental Commission on military and technical cooperation, which was received by the Minister of defence of the Russian Federation. Serdyukov, together with the Vice-President of the Central Military Council, PRC-Gen. Th Bos√Ľn signed a Protocol defining the future direction of development of relations between the two countries in the military and technical sphere. First of all, it is the implementation of contracts for the supply of spare parts for air defence systems, aviation and naval technology and the development of products for the Chinese side through development.

Aurora Flight Sciences Unveiled its Orion Unmanned Air System

Aurora Flight Sciences unveiled its Orion unmanned air system, a demonstrator that will stay aloft for up to five days, on 22 November in Mississippi.

Orion was selected by the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in late August to meet the objectives of the Medium Altitude Global ISR and Communications (Magic) Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD).

The programme's goal is to demonstrate a five-day flight of the Orion at 20,000ft (6,100m) with a 453kg (1,000lb) intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance payload.
First flight is expected in mid-2011, the company says. Orion was developed under the sponsorship of both the AFRL and the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command and with Aurora private funding.

Aurora claimed victory over Lockheed Martin on Magic with Orion in September. The Virginia-based company is doing most of the work on the project from its Columbus, Mississippi, facility under the $4.7 million contract win.

Before the contract announcement, the company had hoped to make a first flight with the UAV in late October 2010. However, the schedule was slowed to enable the parties to evaluate payload options, concepts of operations and then grow and refine the requirements, Aurora says.

The AFRL's requirements for Magic's medium-altitude, extreme persistence aircraft are for it to remain airborne for up to 155h while carrying a 226kg payload at 15,000ft. The same aircraft also would be expected to carry a 1,130kg payload for up to 80h at the same altitude, it says.

Defence Research And Development Organisation Officials Are Planning Missiles Launches Before the Year Ends

Two months after its embarrassing failure in the test firing of nuclear-weapons capable, surface-to-surface Prithvi-II ballistic missile from Chandipur in Orissa, the Defence Research Development Organisation officials are planning a slew of high-profile missile launches before the year ends.

On September 24, the Prithvi-II missile with a maximum range of 350 km dropped off a few seconds after it was fired from a mobile launcher from Integrated Test Range in Chandipur-on-sea of Orissa. DRDO so far has been silent on the failure on the missile which has been inducted into the Army.
DRDO sources said that on November 25, the nuclear-capable and surface-to-surface single stage Agni-I missile would be test-fired by personnel of the Strategic Forces Command as part of Indian Army's user-training exercise from Wheeler Island on Bay of Bengal. The missile was last successfully test-fired on March 28. Like Prithvi-II, Agni-I has also been inducted into the Army. The missile which has a range of 700 km, can carry payloads weighing up to 1000 kg. Agni-1, with its rail and road mobility can target most cities in Pakistan without having to be launched from the border. Agni-I is designed to bridge the gap between indigenously built short-range Prithvi, already deployed in the Army, and medium range Agni-II, that has a range of more than 2,000 km. 
On December 2, DRDO would test-fire supersonic cruise missile Brahmos that has a range of 290 kms. It was last tested successfully on September 5.
Similarly, the 2,000 km plus range surface-to-surface nuclear-capable missile Agni-II would be test-fired from Wheeler Island between December 8 and 12. The missile was last tested successfully on May 17 this year after two successive failures last year. The 20-metre long Agni-II is a two stage, solid-propelled ballistic missile. It has a launch weight of 17 tonnes and can carry a payload of 1000 kg over a distance of 2000 km. In February this year, the 3,500-km plus range Agni-III was also successfully test-fired.

First Operational Akash missile system, Will be Delivered by March 2011

India’s first modern air defence system readying to roll off the assembly line.  Bharat Electronics (BEL) in Bangalore, will deliver operational Akash missile system,    to the IAF by March 2011. This first Akash squadron will protect the Gwalior Air Base, where the IAF bases its Mirage-2000 fighters.
BEL will follow this up quickly with a second Akash squadron by December 2011, which will safeguard Lohegaon Air Base at Pune, a major base for the front-line Sukhoi-30MKI fighters. Meanwhile, another defence public sector undertaking, Bharat Dynamics, will build six more Akash squadrons, most of these for the IAF’s new fighter bases along the Sino-Indian border, including Tezpur, Bagdogra and Hasimara.

“BEL is building two Akash squadrons for Rs 1,221 crore,” says Ashwini Datta, BEL’s chairman and managing director. “The ground infrastructure would cost another Rs 200 crore, so each squadron effectively costs about Rs 700 crore. That is not just significantly cheaper than foreign procurement, but also permits better maintenance and allows for continuous technological improvements.”

DRDO and MoD sources say the Indian Army is close to ordering a high-mobility version of Akash, mounted on T-72 tanks, that can move alongside tank forces. One of the army’s three strike corps, which attack deep into enemy territory, has no anti-aircraft “area defence system”; the other two strike corps are equipped with the vintage Russian SA-6, designed in the early-1960s. This makes them dangerously vulnerable to enemy fighters if they advance deep into enemy territory.

Chinese PLAN Aircraft Carrier Varyag Latest Update

The other thing we can see is wide installations of Type 730 CIWS and HQ-10 (Chinese version of SeaRAM) on Varyag. They are installed in the 4 locations that Kashtan and AK-630 used to be installed on Admiral K class. 

In each of those locations, the 2 Kashtan + 1 AK-630 (maybe 2 AK-630 in a couple of spots) are now replaced by 1 Type 730, 1 HQ-10 and 1 mysterious installation (appears to be some kind multi-purpose rocket launcher for decoy purpose).

India Fast-Tracking New Troop Formations In North-East For China

With China's "assertive" behaviour showing no signs of abating, India is fast-tracking new troop formations for the North-East. Apart from the two new infantry divisions, this includes the interesting experiment of new Arunachal and Sikkim Scouts battalions.

Defence ministry officials said the two fresh infantry mountain divisions, with 1,260 officers and 35,011 soldiers, should be "fully-operational with specialised equipment" by next year. Similarly, the first battalion of Arunachal Scouts will be up and running by May 2011. 

While the new 56 Division has its HQ in Zakama (Nagaland) under the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, the 71 Division at Missamari (Assam) falls in the operational command of the Tezpur-based 4 Corps. Both the new formations are primarily tasked with the defence of Arunachal Pradesh.

"The two divisions are now virtually in place, with officers and soldiers already being posted for them. They are in process of getting new equipment, which includes armoured personnel carriers and light howitzers," said an official.

While this conventional troop-building continues, the experiment of Arunachal Scouts is also underway with the training of its first battalion beginning at Assam Regimental Centre at Shillong earlier this month.

Indian Advanced Medum Combat Aircraft MCA

India has embarked upon an ambitious project to indigenously design and develop a fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) by 2017.

The government released Rs. 100 crore last month to the Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), which will spearhead the project, to prepare feasibility studies in 18 months. The ADA is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Defence.

Disclosing this to reporters here on Saturday, ADA Director and Programme Director (Combat Aircraft) P.S. Subramanyam said AMCA, when developed and produced, would probably be the first medium combat aircraft with 20 tonne weight in the world. Similar aircraft being developed by the United States and Russia are in the range of 30 to 35 tonnes.
ADA seeks $2 bn for advanced medium combat aircraft

the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an autonomous body under the department of defence research and development, Ministry of Defence,
is seeking a $2-billion (approximately Rs 9,060 crore) fund for the development of the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA).

“We have just started working on this fifth-generation aircraft, for which we had already received sanctions to the tune of Rs 100 crore. The way the government is cooperating, I am able to say that we will receive the funding ($2 billion) in the next 18 months,” PS Subramanyam, programme director (combat aircraft) and director of ADA, told Business Standard.

The AMCA will be designed with a small radar cross-section and will feature internal weapons and advanced electronic systems. The twin-engined, stealth-multirole fighter will be equipped with missiles like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)’s Astra, besides stand-off and precision weapons.

The $2-billion fund will initially be utilised to develop two technology demonstrators and seven prototypes. The first flight test is expected to take place by 2017,” he said on the sidelines of the Aviation Conclave 2010, which concluded here on Saturday.

Stating that the AMCAs were aimed at bridging the gap between light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas and Sukhoi heavy weight fighters, Subramanyam said though Russia and the United States were into designing of similar aircraft that weigh 30-35 tonne, the AMCA would weigh only 20 tonne.

Though the AMCAs were primarily being designed to meet the requirements of the Indian Air Force, we are contemplating rolling out a new variant for the Indian Navy as well,” he said, adding ADA would commence research and development on the six-generation AMCA aircraft shortly.


Chengdu J-10 Next Variant Developing

Chengdu Aerospace’s most famous product, the J-10 fighter aircraft, made its inaugural appearance at Zhuhai’s Air Show China in 2008, offering one of the most remarkable flight displays of the event. In the intervening two
years, the program has made notable progress.

The J-10’s evolution mirrors that of another famous single-engine fighter aircraft, the Lockheed Martin F-16 in more than one respect.

One of the F-16’s major developmental milestones was the introduction of a second, alternate engine, the F110-GE-100, which at the time produced 6,000 lbs more thrust than the F-100-PW-100/220 that was the aircraft’s original power plant. In the same vein, Chinese industry has been hard at work to complete testing and development of the Liming Aeroengine Manufacturing Corporation (LMAC) WS-10A engine.

According to Chinese news reports, the WS-10A has been flying on board prototype aircraft of the J-10’s next block-series development, which has been designated as J-10B. The WS-10A will replace the Salyut AL-31FN engine, which was the aircraft’s original power plant.
Included as part of the J-10B’s configuration is an entirely new design for the engine inlet, which has changed from the rectangular configuration developed for the AL-31FN to an oval-shaped inlet. This again parallels the F-16’s development in which a “big mouth” inlet was developed for the aircraft to provide an increase in air flow for the enhanced thrust of the GE F110 engine.

Japan To Beef Up Maritime Defense

Japan will massively reinforce its maritime defense because it feels threatened by China's expanding military power amid a territorial dispute over the Senkaku (or Diaoyu) Islands.

Tokyo is expected to revise its defense white paper for the first time in six years, including deploying troops on Yonaguni Island, close to Taiwan, and lifting a ban on weapons exports, the South China Morning Port reported on Sunday.

The white paper, which is expected to be released next month, will announce a plan to reinforce troops on islands that stretch southwest between the Japanese mainland and Taiwan. It will also include deployment of commando troops on Yonaguni Island, Japan's westernmost island southwest of the Senkaku Islands, and the construction of military facilities on four or five nearby islands, the Hong Kong daily said.

Chinese Air Force New UAV Design

During the Airshow China here at Zhuhai, Avic Defense and one of the country's aeronautics academic institutions, launched a competition with the Chinese air force for new UAV designs. The prize is to be awarded next year and to spur some innovative thinking.

On one of the Chinese CD handouts were a couple of concept drawings. Where they are from or what they represent is unclear, but they are nonetheless entertaining.

And with China already working on its J-10 follow-on, here's some fodder for speculation (the airframe, below, actually looks very little like what China's 5th Gen Fighter is believed to look like, let's just call it the 6th Gen concept.

Sino-Singapore Joint Military Exercise

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) & The People's Liberation Army of China are participating in a counter-terrorism training exercise from Thursday to Nov 26.

This is the second time the training exercise between the two countries has taken place.

About 60 personnel from each side are taking part in Cooperation 2010, which focuses on counter-terrorism security operations for major international events.

The nine-day exercise consists of seminars, planning exercises and response drills.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Friday, Brig-Gen Teo Jing Siong from the SAF said: 'Singapore welcomes China's continued defence exchanges and interactions with our region at the bilateral and multilateral levels, which would help foster cooperation and better understanding between regional militaries.'

Sri Lanka Buying Al-Khalid Tanks from Pakistan

Enhanced defence cooperation between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is likely to be finalised during Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, later this month.

Diplomatic and government sources said that there was a wide scope for enhanced military ties between the two nations and it would be explored during talks between Zardari and his Sri Lankan counterpart, President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

"With the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the nature as well as scope of defence cooperation is bound to change somewhat, but in a broader sense it would include military training, intelligence sharing, arms supplies, etc.

PAF Wants More Chinese Systems

Pakistan is interested in buying more defense systems and equipment from China, and hopes to deepen cooperation to upgrade its armed forces, a top Pakistan Air Force officer said on Wednesday.
Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman told China Daily that Pakistan is evaluating, among other options, three or four Chinese surface-to-air missiles including the advanced "HQ-18".

The missiles, with a maximum range of 100 km, can be used against short-range ballistic missiles, aircraft or cruise missiles, with intercepts taking place between a low-level 25 meters and an altitude of 25 kilometers.

Suleman also said China had completed the first of four Chinese ZDK-03 airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft for the Pakistan Air Force on Nov 13.

"The delivery to Pakistan will start in the early part of next year," said Suleman, who is also chief of the air staff of the Pakistan Air Force.
He said the Pakistan Air Force was also looking at the option of purchasing Chinese engines, though any final decision will depend on the engines' quality.

Suleman brought FC-1 (Fighter China-1) Xiaolong aircraft, an improved version of China's new generation fighter jet co-developed with Pakistan, to the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai.

Pakistan to arm JF-17 with Chinese missiles

Pakistan has confirmed it will buy Chinese missiles and flight systems to equip its 250 JF-17 Thunder jet fighters as it seeks to deepen military cooperation with Beijing, state media said Thursday.
Rao Qamar Suleman, Air Chief Marshal of the Pakistan Air Force, told the Global Times newspaper Chinese radar systems and SD-10 mid-range homing missiles would be used on the fighters co-developed by the two nations.

“PAF has no plans to install Western devices and weapons on the aircraft for the time being,” the newspaper quoted Suleman as saying.

Pakistan may also buy up to four Chinese surface-to-air missiles, as it seeks stronger cooperation with China to help upgrade its armed forces, Suleman told the China Daily in a separate interview.

S-70i Black Hawk Makes Its First Flight In Poland

Sikorsky's S-70i International Black Hawk helicopter has been flown for the first time in Poland, where the aircraft is being assembled by the company's PZL Mielec subsidiary.

Flown on 14 November, the aircraft is the second International Black Hawk to have undergone final assembly in Mielec. The first was shipped to the USA and performed its debut sortie from West Palm Beach, Florida on 1 July, and is having unspecified mission equipment installed.

The programme's next two aircraft are now in final assembly in Poland, with a fifth to enter production in December and deliveries to start next year, says Sikorsky Military Systems. Launch operator for the type will be Saudi Arabia's ministry of internal affairs.

"The S-70i Black Hawk programme has been executed seamlessly," says Robert Mastronardi, the US company's S-70i senior programme manager.

Israel To Test Arrow-3 Interceptor Missile In 2011

 Israel's new Arrow-3 anti-ballistic missile interceptor Test will be performed by mid-2011.

Israel Aerospace Industries, which is developing the Arrow-3, is currently performing ground testing of the new missile, which will intercept incoming ballistic missiles using kinetic kill instead of proximity warhead detonation as with the operational Arrow-2.

Israeli sources say the Arrow-3 will be the most advanced ballistic missile interceptor in the world. They say it will be "very energetic" and have "super manoeuvrability", enabling it to change its trajectory to engage another target that was detected after launch.

The sources say the Arrow-3 will be deployed in parallel to the Arrow-2, and the type to be launched will be determined by the fire control system.

The need for a longer-range kinetic kill interceptor stems from the threat posed by Scud-type missiles with 400-600km (216-324nm) range that Syria deploys, and designs with a 2,000km range, like Iran's Shihab-type weapons.

The Arrow-3 will provide an additional layer in Israel's multi-layered defence system, which the nation has built to protect its territory from rockets and missiles.

Rafael's Iron Dome system has recently proved its capability to destroy salvos from short-range rockets. The company and Raytheon are also developing David's Sling, a system designed to intercept longer-range rockets like the Iranian-designed Fatah-110 by Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

The Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 missiles will provide the upper layer, with the two planned to work separately or together to improve interception probabilities.

Russia Ready To Sell Su-35 Fighter Jets To China

Russia's state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said on Tuesday it was ready to hold talks with China on the delivery of advanced Su-35 fighter aircraft to the Chinese air force.

"We are ready to work with our Chinese partners to this end [Su-35 deliveries]," Deputy General Director of Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev said at the Airshow China 2010, which is being held on November 16-21 in Zhuhai.

The Su-35 Flanker-E, powered by two 117S engines with thrust vectoring, combines high maneuverability and the capability to effectively engage several air targets simultaneously using both guided and unguided missiles and weapon systems.

Russia's Sukhoi aircraft maker earlier said it planned to start deliveries of the new aircraft, billed as "4++ generation using fifth-generation technology," to foreign clients in 2011 and produce Su-35s over a period of 10 years up to 2020.

China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China) is the only international aerospace trade show in China that is endorsed by the Chinese central government. The biannual arms exhibition has been held in Zhuhai since 1996.

Russia To Sell Additional RD-93 Jet Engines To China

Russia's state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport is preparing a contract for the delivery of additional RD-93 jet engines to China, a senior official from the company said on Tuesday.

Beijing concluded a $238-mln contract with Moscow in 2005 for supplies of a 100 RD-93 engines with options for another 400 to equip its FC-1 Fierce Dragon fighter jets, jointly developed with Pakistan.

"We are holding new talks with the China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation [CATIC] on another option for additional 100 RD-93 engines," Deputy General Director of Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev said at the Airshow China 2010, which is being held on November 16-21 in Zhuhai.

"We hope that this contract will be signed," Mikheyev added.

The RD-93 engines is a variant of the RD-33 engine developed to power the MiG-29 fighter jet.

The RD-93 was developed by Russia's Klimov design bureau specifically for the FC-1 fighter, known in Pakistan as the JF-17 Thunder.

US Offers Israel more F-35 fighters


U.S  offers   Israel of more Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighters and other military equipment in return for a 90-day settlement freeze is an offer that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu "cannot refuse," the Haaretz daily said Monday.

According to media reports, U.S. President Barack Obama offered to add
20 F-35s to the 20 Israel ordered in October under a $2.75 billion contract.
The additional F-35s would give the Israeli air force a formidable strike capability unmatched in the region, and indeed the world, that could deliver massive blows against an adversary, such as Iran.

"The offer by President Obama is very enticing," Haaretz commentator Amos Harel observed.

"The addition of 20 F-35s to the package discussed two months ago tips the balance very clearly. From Israel's point of view, it's an offer that cannot be refused."
